REGULATIONS
REQUIREMENTS
The 49th Krakow Film Festival will be held from 29th May to 4th June 2009. The main aim of the Festival is to present and review documentaries, animated films and short feature films. The films are screened in three competitions:
- international competition for films produced outside Poland with a running time of:
- 60 minutes or less – documentary films
- 30 minutes or less – animated films
- 30 minutes or less – short feature films
which have not had a Polish premiere.
- national competition for Polish films with a running time:
- 60 minutes or less – documentary films
- 30 minutes or less – animated films
- 30 minutes or less – short feature films
Out of the films screened in the national competition, the Selection Committee shall choose the films that will enter the international selection. The Golden Hobby-Horse winning film shall take part in the international competition.
- international feature-length documentary competition for documentary films with a running time of at least 60 minutes produced in Poland and abroad which have not had a Polish premiere.
Only the films completed after 1st January 2008 may be submitted to the selection.
At the request of the Selection Committee the Festival Director shall decide whether the film has been admitted to the competition. In exceptional circumstances the Organisers may withdraw from the requirement that the films eligible for the national competition must be premieres. The decisions of the Festival Director are final and may not be appealed.
There is no entry fee.
SELECTION
The films shall be submitted on DVDs in the PAL system (region lock free).
Deadlines:
30th November 2008 for films produced before 31st August 2008
11th February 2009 for films produced after 31st August 2008
In order to be considered for selection films must be entered on-line (www.kff.com.pl) and received in the Festival Office by the above deadlines. Preview copies (DVD) shall be sent to the following address:

If the preview copy does not arrive in the Festival Office by the deadline or its entry form is not duly completed the Organisers have no obligation whatsoever to admit the film to the selection. The Festival does not return the preview copies (DVD) submitted to the selection.
The Applicant consents to the Organisers publishing information about the film on the Festival website as well as in all printed promotional materials (such as the catalogue, the programme, press materials, etc.).
COMPETITION
Applicants shall be notified of the film admission or rejection by e-mail, fax or post at least 30 days before the beginning of the Festival. Following the final decisions of the Selection Committee the list of the films accepted to the competition run shall also be published on the Festival website www.kff.com.pl. If the film has been admitted to festival screenings the applicant is obliged to send the following materials:
- film stills
- synopsis
- photo and biography of the director
- dialogue list in English
The following formats are accepted for festival screenings:
- 35mm
- 16mm
- BETA SP PAL
- Digital BETA
All copies must be subtitled in English.
PLEASE NOTE: Films on CD-ROM, DVD or in BETA SP NTSC or U-matic video formats will not be accepted.

DISPATCH, INSURANCE AND RETURN OF FILM TAPES
The applicant shall bear all the transport costs of DVDs submitted for selection, competition copies as well as all the shipping charges. The applicant shall also pay all the customs duties outside Poland and must conform to the customs regulations concerning the transport of films. All shipments from outside the EU must be accompanied with the pro forma invoice of maximum € 20.
All screening prints and BETA tapes shall be returned by the Organisers and at their own cost within two weeks after the closing of the Festival. Any changes in the sender's return address shall be notified to the Organisers not later than one week before the start of the Festival.
The films selected for the competition shall be insured by the Organisers against damage, theft and third-party liability while they remain in the Organisers' possession.
PRIZES
The Jury awards the following prizes in the international competition:
- The Golden Dragon for the director of the best film
- The Silver Dragon for the best documentary film
- The Silver Dragon for the best animated film
- The Silver Dragon for the best feature film
- Honourable Mentions
The Jury awards the following prizes in the national competition:
- The Golden Hobby-Horse for the director of the best film
- The Silver Hobby-Horse for the best documentary film
- The Silver Hobby-Horse for the best animated film
- The Silver Hobby-Horse for the best feature film
- Honourable Mentions
The Jury awards the following prizes in the feature-length documentary competition:
- The Golden Horn for the best film
- The Silver Horn for a special artistic value
- Honourable Mention
The People's Choice Award is an audience award to the best film presented in the competitions.
The Programme Council of the Krakow Film Foundation grants the Dragon of Dragons, a special lifetime achievement award, for the outstanding contribution to the development of documentary or animated film.
SCREENINGS
Competition films may have no more than three screenings during the Festival.
Applicants shall not withdraw their films from the Festival.
The films selected to the competition screenings become automatically available to the participants of the Krakow Film Market organised during the Festival. The Festival Organisers do not return preview copies (DVD) of competition films. The copies are retained in the Festival Archives.
The producers of the competition films consent to 5 gratuitous post-festival screenings of award-winning films in Poland or abroad. The exact schedule of such screenings shall be sent to the producers after the announcement of the Jury's verdict. Additional presentations outside this schedule shall require the prior consent of the producer.
For promotional purposes, television stations may be granted access to special promotional films prepared by film producers on the conditions specified in the entry form.
FINAL PROVISIONS
Submitting a film to the Krakow Film Festival is equivalent to the acceptance of the conditions set out in these Regulations.
All decisions in the matters not covered by these Regulations shall be taken by the Organisers represented by the Festival Director. The Regulations have been drawn up in accordance with the FIAPF International Regulations. Should there be any doubts the Polish version prevails.
